Anchors Away!! The artful anchors project is underway thanks to these students at South Shore Vo-Tech! Under the direction of their teacher, Tom Bodio, these students cut and sanded 10 anchors.
Congratulations to Cedar School, the winner of the 2015 Artful Anchors contest! Art teacher Ann Conte worked on the project with 4th grade students. They will receive a $200 prize. Thank you to all of the groups and individuals who designed these incredible pieces of art!
As you may know, one of the symbols on the Hanover Town Seal designed by James Waterman, is the anchor. Hanover industry in the early 1800’s became known for its shipbuilding and forging of anchors for the US Navy.
The “ARTFUL ANCHORS” contest will be conducted by Karen Cass, Chair of the Hanover Cultural Council as part of the 12th Annual Hanover Day Celebration to be held on Saturday June 24, 2017.
Reserve your anchor today to enter the contest. Anchors can be reserved for $40.00 made payable to the Hanover Cultural Council. Individuals or community groups are invited to reserve a 4’ x 4’ wooden anchor to design and decorate in any medium they choose. Reserve your anchors by April 14th.
There are only 10 anchors available, so please act quickly!! Gather a group or take the project on yourself. The anchors will be on display at Hanover Day and visitors will be able to vote for their favorite anchor design.
** A cash prize of $200 will be awarded to the winner. **
Anchors must be delivered to the B. Everett Hall field by 9:00 am on June 24th and will need to be fitted with brackets on the back in order to be displayed at Hanover Day. Brackets will be provided when you pick up your anchor.
Anchors are cut from special, water-resistant plywood and can be displayed outdoors. Artists should prime all exposed surfaces of the anchor to seal the wood and further protect the surface. All techniques and materials are welcome. Be inventive! Express yourself! Use the anchor to show your town spirit, a unique group theme or business affiliation. All town organizations and individual artists are welcome to enter this contest.
Artists will be encouraged to choose a prominent location in town
to display their 'ARTFUL ANCHOR'.
